Cystinuria Type III Variant 2 · Type 3 Cystinuria · Androgen-dependent cystinuria · Cystinurie Typ 3 · Cystinurie Typ III Variante 2 · Type 3 Cystinuria Bulldog · Cystine Urolithiasis Type III · Cystinurie Typ 3 Variante 2
This is an inherited metabolic disorder of the kidneys where the organ fails to properly reabsorb the amino acid cystine from the urine. Excess cystine then builds up and forms painful crystals or stones in the bladder and urinary tract. This specific Type 3 variant is complex and influenced by hormones, primarily putting intact male dogs at risk.
Affected dogs typically show signs of urinary distress, such as blood in the urine, frequent straining, or difficulty urinating, usually starting between 1 and 4 years of age. A sudden, complete inability to urinate is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate veterinary care.
Management is lifelong and involves a specialized diet, preventative medication, and potentially surgery to remove stones, with typical costs ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 EUR. For this hormone-dependent variant, neutering male dogs can also significantly reduce the risk of stone formation.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
