What it is
This is an extremely rare degenerative condition affecting the external obturator muscle, which is a deep muscle in the hip joint responsible for rotating the hind leg. Over time, the muscle tissue degrades or develops scarring, which impairs normal movement. It is a muscular disorder that has only been documented in very rare cases.
How it presents
Owners may notice their dog limping on a hind leg, showing stiffness when walking, or showing signs of pain when the hip is moved. Symptoms typically appear in young adulthood, with the first documented case occurring in an eighteen-month-old dog.
Treatment
The condition is treatable and can often resolve spontaneously without surgical intervention. Treatment typically focuses on conservative management, such as rest and pain relief, with expected costs ranging from 150 to 1000 EUR.
