An ectopic ureter is a birth defect affecting the urinary system where the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, known as ureters, bypass the bladder and connect to the wrong location. This abnormal connection, which often ends in the urethra or vagina, prevents the bladder from properly holding urine.
Owners typically notice constant, involuntary urine dribbling starting in puppyhood, often from the moment the puppy is brought home. Affected dogs may also experience recurrent urinary tract infections, leading to frequent attempts to urinate.
The condition is treatable, usually requiring a one-time surgical correction or a minimally invasive laser procedure, though some dogs may need ongoing medication. The total cost for diagnostics and treatment typically ranges from €2,000 to €6,000.
