Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva · Myositis ossificans progressiva · Münchmeyer-Syndrom · Progressive ossifying fibrodysplasia
Fibrodysplasia ossificans is an extremely rare condition affecting the musculoskeletal system, where soft tissues like muscles, tendons, and ligaments gradually turn into solid bone. This abnormal bone formation, known as ossification, occurs outside the normal skeleton and slowly locks the joints in place. Over time, this process severely restricts the dog's ability to move.
Symptoms typically begin during puppyhood or young adulthood, starting with painful, firm swellings in the muscles. As the disease progresses, owners will notice gradual stiffening of the limbs and neck, leading to a loss of mobility.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and treatment is limited to lifelong supportive care and pain management. The estimated lifelong cost for medications and palliative care ranges from 1,500 to 5,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
