This is a standardized physical exercise test, such as the VDH-Fitnesstest or Respiratory Function Grading Scheme, used to evaluate the respiratory system of flat-faced (brachycephalic) dogs. It measures how well a dog breathes during and after exertion to detect Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which is a chronic narrowing of the upper airways. The test is primarily used to ensure only dogs with healthy, functional airways are selected for breeding.
Owners will typically notice symptoms like loud wheezing, heavy snoring, extreme shortness of breath, or collapse during exercise or in warm weather. These signs of respiratory distress often become apparent during the dog's first year of life.
Dogs that fail the test due to airway obstruction often require surgical interventions, such as widening the nostrils or shortening the soft palate, to improve airflow. These procedures are typically one-time surgeries costing between €1,500 and €5,000, though lifelong care to prevent overheating may still be necessary.
