Gallbladder mucoceles(GBM)
Also known as: Gallenblasenmukozele · Gallbladder mucocele · Biliary mucocele · Gallenblasen-Mukozele · Mucocele of the gallbladder · …
Overview
What it is
A gallbladder mucocele is a condition of the digestive system where the gallbladder becomes stretched and filled with thick, jelly-like mucus. This buildup blocks the normal flow of bile, which is a digestive fluid produced by the liver. If left untreated, the pressure can cause the gallbladder to rupture, leading to severe abdominal infection.
How it presents
Symptoms typically develop in middle-aged to older dogs and include vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, and abdominal discomfort. Owners may also notice a yellow tint to the gums or whites of the eyes, known as jaundice.
Treatment
The condition is treatable, usually requiring a one-time emergency surgery to remove the gallbladder. This procedure and the necessary supportive care typically cost between €2,000 and €6,000.
