Glioma susceptibility is a complex genetic predisposition that increases a dog's risk of developing gliomas, which are malignant tumors of the brain and spinal cord. These tumors arise from glial cells, which are the supportive cells that surround and protect neurons in the central nervous system. Because this is a complex trait influenced by multiple genetic and environmental factors, there is currently no commercial single-gene DNA test available.
Symptoms typically emerge in middle-aged to older dogs as the tumor grows and presses on brain tissue. Owners may notice seizures, sudden behavioral or personality changes, vision loss, or difficulty with balance and coordination.
While these brain tumors are generally incurable, palliative treatments such as medications, surgery, or radiation therapy can help manage symptoms and extend quality of life. These supportive therapies are typically lifelong and can be costly, with treatment expenses generally ranging from 1,500 to 8,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
