Hereditary footpad hyperkeratosis, also known as palmoplantar hyperkeratosis, is an inherited skin disorder caused by an autosomal-recessive genetic mutation. It affects the outer layer of the skin on a dog's paw pads, causing an overproduction of keratin, which is the tough protective protein found in hair and nails. This leads to abnormally thick, hard, and inelastic pads that easily crack and split.
Owners will typically notice symptoms in puppies between 4 and 8 weeks of age, starting with extremely hard, cracked paw pads and horn-like growths. Because these cracks are painful, affected dogs often develop a stiff, uncomfortable gait and may hesitate to walk on hard or uneven ground.
There is no cure for this lifelong condition, so management requires daily paw care, including moisturizing ointments, trimming excess horn tissue, and using protective booties. Lifetime treatment costs, including managing secondary infections, typically range from €1,500 to €5,000.
