Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, also known as cutaneous asthenia, is an inherited connective tissue disorder that affects the skin and joints. It is caused by a genetic defect in collagen, which is the primary structural protein that provides strength and elasticity to tissues. Because of this defect, the skin lacks its normal structural integrity, making it unusually fragile, thin, and loose.
Owners typically notice symptoms starting in puppyhood, characterized by extremely stretchy, loose skin folds that tear easily during normal play or grooming. These minor injuries often lead to deep, slow-healing wounds and prominent scarring, and some dogs may also show unusually loose or flexible joints.
There is no cure for this lifelong condition, and management focuses on preventing injuries through a protected environment and protective clothing. Ongoing veterinary care is required to surgically repair skin tears, with lifetime costs typically ranging from 1,500 to 8,000 EUR.
