This is an inherited kidney disease that primarily affects Samoyeds due to a genetic defect on the X chromosome. This defect impairs the collagen structure in the kidney's filtering units, known as glomeruli, preventing them from properly filtering waste from the blood. Over time, this structural weakness leads to progressive and severe kidney damage.
Affected male puppies typically begin showing signs between 3 and 6 months of age. Owners may notice increased thirst and urination, weight loss, poor growth, and vomiting as kidney function declines.
There is no cure for this condition, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms to temporarily support kidney function. Lifelong supportive care, including special diets and medications, typically costs between 1,500 and 6,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
