What it is
This is an inherited muscle disease affecting the skeletal muscles of Labrador Retrievers and Bouviers des Flandres. It is caused by a genetic defect that prevents muscle fibers from developing normally, leading to progressive muscle wasting where the muscles gradually shrink and weaken.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in puppies between 2 and 5 months of age. Owners will usually notice an unusual 'bunny-hopping' gait, general muscle weakness, and rapid fatigue that worsens with cold temperatures or stress.
Treatment
While the disease is incurable, it often stabilizes in adulthood. Lifelong supportive care, including physical therapy and specialized dietary management, is required and typically costs between €1,500 and €6,000.
