What it is
Classic-like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (clEDS) is an inherited connective tissue disorder affecting the skin and joints. It is caused by a deficiency in Tenascin-X, a protein essential for organizing collagen, which is the body's main structural support network. Without this protein, the skin and supporting tissues lose their strength and elasticity.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable during puppyhood. Owners will observe unusually stretchy, loose, and fragile skin that tears easily, alongside loose joints that may bend further than normal.
Treatment
There is no cure for this lifelong condition, which requires continuous protective care and prompt wound management. Lifetime veterinary care and injury prevention typically cost between 2,500 and 10,000 EUR.
