Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome (CMS) is an inherited genetic disorder that disrupts the communication between nerves and muscles. This breakdown in the neuromuscular system prevents signals from reaching the muscles properly, leading to rapid muscle fatigue and weakness. Unlike some other muscle-weakness disorders, this is a congenital condition present from birth and is not caused by an autoimmune system malfunction.
Symptoms typically appear in puppies between 3 and 12 weeks of age, starting with extreme weakness or collapse after brief exercise. Owners will often notice a stiff, wobbly gait, though the puppy usually recovers temporarily after a short period of rest.
While CMS is a lifelong, incurable condition, symptoms can often be managed with daily medication to support nerve-to-muscle signaling. Ongoing veterinary care and lifelong treatment typically cost between 1,500 and 6,000 EUR.
