Vasculopathy, cutaneous and renal
Cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy, commonly known as Alabama Rot, is a severe disease that damages the tiny blood vessels in a dog's skin and kidneys. This damage causes blood clots to form in the vessels, which blocks normal blood flow and leads to localized tissue death. This process results in painful skin lesions and can trigger sudden, life-threatening kidney failure.
Owners will typically first notice unexplained skin sores, redness, or open ulcers on the dog's legs, paws, chest, or muzzle. If the disease progresses to the kidneys, symptoms like vomiting, extreme tiredness, and a loss of appetite will develop within a few days.
While there is no specific cure, intensive emergency veterinary care and hospitalization are required to support kidney function. This critical care is highly intensive and typically costs between 2,000 and 8,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
