Lundehund syndrome is an inherited gastrointestinal disease caused by an autosomal-recessive genetic mutation. It leads to chronic inflammation of the intestinal lining, which prevents the body from properly absorbing nutrients. This inflammation causes a condition called protein-losing enteropathy, where essential proteins leak out of the bloodstream and into the digestive tract.
The condition typically appears in young to middle-aged dogs, presenting as chronic or episodic diarrhea, vomiting, and significant weight loss. Owners may also notice a swollen belly caused by fluid accumulation in the abdomen.
This is an incurable, lifelong condition that requires a strict, specialized diet and ongoing medical therapy to manage symptoms. Lifetime treatment and monitoring costs typically range from €3,000 to €12,000.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
