This is an inherited metabolic disorder where the body is unable to properly break down medium-chain fatty acids, which are specific types of fats used for energy. Because of a genetic variant in the ACADM gene, the metabolic system cannot convert these fats into fuel, leading to a severe energy deficit. This shortage of energy primarily impacts the liver and cellular function, especially during periods of fasting.
Owners will typically notice symptoms during periods of fasting or stress, which include extreme lethargy, vomiting, weakness, and potentially severe seizures. These signs most commonly first appear in puppies or young dogs when they go too long without food.
The condition is lifelong and cannot be cured, but it can be managed successfully by feeding a strict diet with frequent meals to avoid fasting. Emergency veterinary care may be needed for sudden crises, with overall management costs ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
