Acute megakaryoblastic leukemia · Megakaryozytäre Leukämie · Acute myeloid leukemia M7 · AML-M7 · Megakaryoblastenleukämie
Megakaryoblastic leukaemia is a rare, severe cancer of the bone marrow where abnormal, immature cells that normally produce blood platelets (megakaryoblasts) multiply uncontrollably. This rapid growth crowds out healthy blood cells, disrupting normal blood production. A definitive diagnosis requires specialized veterinary testing, specifically a bone marrow biopsy and immunophenotyping.
This disease typically affects adult dogs, with symptoms appearing suddenly and progressing rapidly. Owners may notice extreme lethargy, a loss of appetite, fever, pale gums, and an increased tendency to bleed or bruise.
The disease is rarely curable, and treatment is primarily palliative, focusing on chemotherapy and blood transfusions to temporarily extend and improve quality of life. Ongoing supportive care typically costs between 2,000 and 8,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
