Malignant melanoma is an aggressive cancer of the pigment-producing cells, called melanocytes, which give color to a dog's skin and tissues. It most commonly develops in the mouth, on the toes, or on the skin, where these cells multiply uncontrollably. This cancer is highly prone to spreading, or metastasizing, to other vital organs like the lungs.
It typically appears in older dogs as dark, rapidly growing lumps on the skin, or as bleeding gums and bad breath when located in the mouth. If the toes are affected, owners may notice limping, pain, or swelling around the nail bed.
Treatment is aimed at extending survival and usually involves a combination of surgical removal, radiation, and immunotherapy. This complex, ongoing management is costly, typically ranging from 2,000 to 8,000 EUR.
