Muscle hypertrophy, dysphagia, and gait abnormalities
Muscular dystrophy with muscle hypertrophy, dysphagia, and gait abnormalities · Muskelhypertrophie, Dysphagie und Gangstörungen
What it is
This is an inherited muscle disorder, or myopathy, that affects the skeletal muscles responsible for movement and swallowing. It is caused by genetic mutations that disrupt normal muscle cell structure, leading to abnormal muscle enlargement and a loss of normal function.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear during puppyhood, with owners noticing an unusually bulky or muscular build and a stiff, wooden way of walking. Affected dogs also have severe difficulty swallowing, which can lead to drooling, gagging, and coughing after eating or drinking.
Treatment
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and treatment is limited to lifelong supportive care to manage symptoms and prevent complications like aspiration pneumonia. Lifetime management costs generally range from €2,500 to €10,000.
