An omphalocele is a severe congenital defect of the abdominal wall where the puppy's internal organs, such as the intestines, develop outside the body. These organs remain enclosed in a thin, translucent sac at the base of the umbilical cord. This occurs because the abdominal muscles fail to close properly during early embryonic development.
This condition is visible immediately at birth. Owners will notice a distinct sac containing internal organs protruding from the puppy's navel area.
Treatment requires immediate, emergency surgery after birth to safely return the organs to the abdomen and close the wall. This is a one-time corrective procedure, with estimated costs ranging from 1,500 to 4,000 EUR, including necessary intensive post-operative care.
