Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome (PMDS) is a genetic disorder of the reproductive system in male dogs. It occurs when the internal female reproductive tract, including the uterus, fails to break down during embryonic development and remains present alongside male organs. Affected dogs are genetically male and typically have normal external male anatomy, but carry these hidden internal female structures.
Owners usually first notice signs in young dogs, often when one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum. Over time, the retained internal organs can lead to complications like abdominal pain, urinary tract infections, or testicular tumors as the dog matures.
The condition is treatable through a one-time surgical procedure to remove both the retained testicles and the abnormal uterine tissue. This surgery typically costs between 800 and 2500 EUR and prevents future life-threatening infections or cancers.
