Unilateral polycystic kidney disease · Congenital unilateral polycystic kidney · Zystische Mononephrose · Einseitige polyzystische Nierenerkrankung
This is a rare congenital condition affecting the urinary system where a dog is born with only one kidney, a state known as unilateral renal agenesis, and that single kidney develops numerous fluid-filled cysts. Because there is no healthy second kidney to compensate, the progressive cyst growth damages the remaining kidney tissue, eventually leading to kidney failure. An abdominal ultrasound is the primary diagnostic tool used to identify these structural changes.
Owners typically notice symptoms of kidney failure in puppies or young dogs, including increased thirst, frequent urination, poor appetite, vomiting, and a failure to grow normally.
There is no cure for this condition, so management focuses on lifelong supportive care, such as special diets and fluid therapy, to maintain quality of life. Supportive treatment typically costs between 1,000 and 4,500 EUR.
