Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM1)(PSSM1)
Polysaccharid-Speicher-Myopathie · Exertional Rhabdomyolysis · Belastungsinduzierte Myopathie · Tying-up Syndrom beim Hund · Glykogenspeicherkrankheit der Muskeln · PSSM Typ 1
What it is
This is a genetic metabolic disorder affecting the muscles, where the dog's body abnormally stores excess sugar, called glycogen, inside muscle cells. Because the muscles cannot process this stored sugar properly, they suffer from an energy deficit and damage during physical activity. This damage to the muscle fibers is known as exertional rhabdomyolysis.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice symptoms after exercise, including muscle stiffness, trembling, painful cramps, and a reluctance to move. In severe cases, the breakdown of muscle tissue can cause the dog's urine to appear dark. These signs usually first emerge in young to middle-aged adult dogs.
Treatment
The condition is not curable but can be managed long-term with a specialized low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet and carefully regulated exercise. Lifelong management, including veterinary check-ups and dietary adjustments, typically costs between 1,500 and 6,000 EUR.
