Prekallikrein deficiency is an inherited blood disorder where the body lacks a specific protein needed for the normal clotting process. This protein, called prekallikrein, helps activate the chemical reactions that stop bleeding. Despite its role in the circulatory system, this deficiency does not impair the dog's actual ability to form clots in real-world scenarios.
Affected dogs typically show no physical symptoms at all, and the condition is present from birth. It is usually discovered by chance during routine pre-surgery blood tests that show an abnormally long clotting time.
No treatment is necessary because the condition does not cause health problems or affect life expectancy. The only associated costs are one-time diagnostic blood tests, which typically range from 50 to 250 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
