Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis(IPF)
Also known as: Westie lung · Canine idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis · CIPF · Idiopathische Lungenfibrose
Overview
What it is
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a severe, progressive disease of the respiratory system where the lung tissue becomes scarred and thickened over time. The term 'idiopathic' means the underlying cause of this scarring is unknown. As the lung tissue loses its elasticity, it becomes increasingly difficult for oxygen to pass from the lungs into the bloodstream.
How it presents
This condition typically affects older dogs, who may show a persistent dry cough, rapid or labored breathing, and quick fatigue during normal exercise. Owners might also notice a distinct crackling sound when the dog breathes.
Treatment
There is no cure for this progressive disease, so lifelong management is focused on supportive care to ease breathing and maintain quality of life. Palliative treatments, including anti-inflammatory medications and cough suppressants, typically cost between €1,500 and €6,000.
