This is an inherited respiratory disease passed down in an autosomal-recessive manner, meaning a puppy must inherit the gene variant from both parents to be affected. It is caused by a genetic variant in the AKNA gene, which leads to recurrent and severe inflammation of the lung tissue. The condition affects the respiratory system, impairing the lungs' ability to function properly and leading to frequent infections.
Affected dogs typically show symptoms starting in puppyhood, often within the first few months of life. Owners will notice chronic coughing, thick nasal discharge, difficulty breathing, and repeated bouts of pneumonia.
The condition is incurable and requires lifelong supportive care, including medications, nebulization, and frequent veterinary visits to manage infections. Lifetime management is costly, with treatment expenses typically ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
