Severe combined immunodeficiency disease, autosomal, T cell-negative, B cell-negative, NK cell-positive(SCID)
Autosomal Severe Combined Immunodeficiency · T-B-NK+ SCID · RAG1 deficiency · RAG2 deficiency
What it is
This is a severe, inherited disorder of the immune system where the body fails to produce functional T and B white blood cells, which are crucial for fighting infections. While natural killer (NK) cells—another type of immune cell—are still present, they are not enough to protect the body. This leaves affected puppies completely vulnerable to even minor viruses, bacteria, and fungi.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear within the first few weeks of life. Owners will notice severe, recurring infections of the skin, respiratory tract, or digestive system, along with poor growth and general weakness.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and it is unfortunately fatal at a very young age. Supportive care to temporarily manage infections typically costs between 500 and 2000 EUR, but humane euthanasia is usually recommended to prevent suffering.
