Verdeckte Spina bifida · Spaltwirbel · Spinal dysraphism · Vertebral cleft
Spina bifida occulta is a mild, hidden developmental defect of the skeletal system where one or more of the bony arches of the spine fail to close completely during development. Because the spinal cord and its protective membranes usually remain intact and in their normal position, the nervous system is typically unaffected. A spinal radiograph, or X-ray, is the primary diagnostic tool used to identify this vertebral arch defect.
Most affected dogs show no symptoms at all, and the condition is often discovered by chance. When signs do appear, usually in puppyhood, owners might notice a small dimple or an unusual patch of hair on the lower back, or occasionally mild weakness in the hind legs.
Most cases require no treatment at all. If mild neurological symptoms occur, supportive care such as physiotherapy or pain management can help, with lifetime costs typically ranging between 150 and 2000 EUR.
