Von Willebrand Disease Type II is an inherited bleeding disorder affecting the blood and circulatory system. It is caused by a structural defect in the von Willebrand factor, which is a crucial protein that helps blood platelets stick together to form clots. Because this protein does not function correctly, the dog's body cannot properly stop bleeding, a process known as hemostasis, after an injury.
Symptoms typically appear at a young age, often during puppyhood. Owners may notice spontaneous nosebleeds, bleeding gums, blood in the urine or stool, or unusually prolonged bleeding after minor injuries and routine surgeries.
This condition is lifelong and incurable, requiring careful management to prevent injuries. In emergencies or before surgeries, blood or plasma transfusions are necessary, with treatment costs typically ranging from 1,000 to 6,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
