This is a genetic developmental disorder affecting the reproductive system, where a dog with male chromosomes (XY) develops atypical, female, or ambiguous sexual organs. It occurs when the normal formation of the gonads (the organs that make reproductive cells, like testes or ovaries) and external genitalia is disrupted during embryonic development.
Owners typically notice signs during puppyhood or puberty, such as unusual-looking external genitalia, undescended testicles, or a female dog that never goes into heat. In many cases, the condition is only discovered incidentally by a veterinarian during a routine neutering procedure.
The condition is managed with a one-time surgical removal of the internal gonads (neutering) to prevent future tumor development, which typically costs between 600 and 2500 EUR. Following surgery, affected dogs generally live a normal, healthy life without the need for lifelong medication.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
