Breed Profile
The Cao da Serra da Estrela, also known as the Estrela Mountain Dog, is an impressive breed from Portugal and belongs to FCI Group 2, Section 2.2, the Molosser Mountain Dogs. They are characterized by their robust, powerful build and their striking head with a strong jaw. The ears are medium-sized, triangular and hang down the sides of the head. The eyes are oval, slanted and have a honey to dark brown color. The Estrela Mountain Dog is available in two different coat varieties: the long-haired, whose coat is dense and coarse and protects well against the elements, and the short-haired, whose coat is smoother and softer. Both varieties have a thick undercoat that helps them survive the harsh conditions in the mountains. The most common coat color is fawn, but there are also examples in gray, yellow and wolf gray. There is no notable difference between performance and show lines in this breed, as they were traditionally bred primarily as working dogs and are still valued for their natural herding and guarding instincts.

History
The Cao da Serra da Estrela breed has a long and proud history and is one of the oldest breeds in Portugal. It comes from the Estrela Mountains, the highest mountains in Portugal, where it was used as a herding and guard dog for flocks of sheep. These dogs had to be tough and resilient to withstand the harsh conditions in the mountains and had to have both protective and herding instincts to protect herds from predators and keep them together. The exact origins of the breed are unknown, but it is believed to have existed since ancient times. It is probably the result of crossing local dogs with dogs brought to Portugal by the Romans and the Moors. The breed was officially recognized in the 20th century, although it had been known and appreciated in Portugal for many centuries. Despite their popularity in their home country, these dogs are relatively unknown outside of Portugal.
The Cão da Serra da Estrela was used as a livestock guard dog in Portugal's Estrela Mountains and is known for its alertness and robustness.
