See puppiesThe Grey German Shepherd exhibits a classic coat coloration ranging from light ash grey to deep agouti or wolf grey. The dense double coat typically features darker clouding along the back and a distinct black facial mask. Puppies are often born with a more uniform, lighter tone; as they mature, the coat generally darkens and develops its full banded, shaded pattern. Within German breeding programs, grey is firmly established and regularly present, particularly in working and performance lines, even though black and tan variants remain more prevalent in show lines. Under FCI Standard No. 166, grey with darker clouding, a dark saddle pattern, and a black mask is an officially recognized standard color.
Grey is a colour the FCI standard recognises in the German Shepherd.
Colour is not a mark of quality. A price premium for a ‘rare’ colour is a warning sign.
