Black in the Labrador Retriever

The Black Labrador Retriever features a solid, deep-black coat with a distinct sheen that covers the entire body uniformly. Its short, dense double coat with a weather-resistant undercoat has a firm texture. Puppies are born with fully pigmented, rich black coats. This deep coloration remains consistent throughout adulthood, though senior dogs may develop gray hairs around the muzzle, and sun exposure during seasonal shedding can occasionally cause a temporary reddish undertone. As the breed's ancestral and genetically dominant color, black is one of the most frequently represented coat colors in registered litters. Under the FCI Standard No. 122, wholly black is fully recognized as an official standard color, with a small white spot on the chest being permissible.
