Chocolate in the Labrador Retriever

The chocolate Labrador Retriever features a dense, short, and weather-resistant double coat with a rich, uniform color. Shades range from medium liver to deep, dark chocolate, always presented as a solid color (a small white patch on the chest is permissible by standard). Typical for this color variety are brown pigmentation on the nose and eye rims, complemented by hazel or amber eyes. Puppies are born with brown coats, which typically deepen in gloss and density as the mature, water-repellent topcoat and undercoat fully develop. Exposure to sun and weather may cause temporary, subtle lightening of the outer coat. According to FCI Standard No. 122, liver/chocolate is one of the three officially recognized coat colors alongside black and yellow, and it is regularly bred and widely represented in German litters.

Chocolate is a colour the FCI standard recognises in the Labrador Retriever.

Colour is not a mark of quality. A price premium for a ‘rare’ colour is a warning sign.
