Familial Enamel Hypoplasia · FEH · Zahnschmelzhypoplasie · Autosomal Recessive Amelogenesis Imperfecta · ARAI · Amelogenesis imperfecta · ACP4-related enamel hypoplasia
This is an inherited genetic disorder affecting the dental system, specifically the development of tooth enamel. Due to a genetic mutation, the protective outer layer of the teeth (enamel) does not form properly or is completely missing. This leaves the softer, underlying layers of the teeth exposed, making them fragile and highly sensitive.
Owners will typically notice symptoms as soon as the puppy's teeth begin to emerge. The teeth often appear yellowish-brown, have a rough or pitted texture, and wear down rapidly, sometimes causing noticeable discomfort during eating.
While the underlying enamel defect cannot be cured, the condition is managed through lifelong dental care, including regular professional cleanings and necessary extractions under anesthesia. Managing this condition typically costs between €2,000 and €7,000 over the dog's lifetime.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
