Chondrodystrophy is an inherited genetic condition that affects the development of cartilage and bone, leading to shortened limbs. This abnormal growth also causes the cartilage in the spinal discs to harden and degenerate prematurely. This degeneration significantly increases the risk of painful spinal disc herniations, which occur when the cushioning discs between the vertebrae bulge or rupture.
Owners will typically notice shortened legs relative to the dog's body, alongside sudden signs of back pain, reluctance to jump, or hind limb weakness and paralysis. These spinal symptoms frequently appear early in life, typically between 1 and 4 years of age.
While the skeletal malformation itself is permanent, resulting disc herniations can be treated with emergency surgery, pain management, and rehabilitation. This treatment is costly, typically ranging from 2,000 to 9,000 EUR, and dogs may require lifelong care or physical therapy.
