Spina bifida
Also known as: Spaltwirbel · offener Rücken · spinal dysraphism
Overview
What it is
Spina bifida is a congenital birth defect of the nervous system where the vertebrae, which are the bones of the spine, fail to close completely around the spinal cord during embryonic development. This incomplete closure leaves the delicate spinal cord unprotected, which can lead to nerve damage in the lower back.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable in early puppyhood as the dog begins to walk and move around. Owners may observe coordination issues in the hind limbs, weakness or paralysis, and difficulty controlling urination or bowel movements.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, so affected dogs usually require lifelong supportive care, physical therapy, or mobility aids. Managing these symptoms and providing supportive care typically costs between 500 and 6,000 EUR.
