This is a severe inherited respiratory disease affecting the lungs, often associated with a genetic defect in surfactant production. Surfactant is a natural protective fluid that allows the lungs' tiny air sacs, called alveoli, to expand and absorb oxygen. Without it, these air sacs collapse, making normal breathing impossible.
Symptoms appear almost immediately after birth or within the first few hours of life. Affected puppies show severe breathing distress, rapid panting, and blue-tinted gums or mucous membranes due to oxygen deprivation.
This condition is currently untreatable and is rapidly fatal. Veterinary costs typically range from 100 to 500 EUR, which generally covers initial supportive care and humane euthanasia to prevent suffering.
