Acute respiratory distress syndrome
This hereditary condition is caused by a genetic mutation in the ANLN gene, which severely damages the physical structure of the lungs. The lungs are the primary organs responsible for oxygen exchange, and this structural damage prevents them from functioning properly, leading to acute respiratory distress.
Symptoms typically appear in young puppies between one and four weeks of age. Owners will notice severe difficulty breathing, rapid panting, and a bluish tint to the gums and tongue due to a lack of oxygen.
There is no cure for this fatal condition, and treatment is limited to supportive care or humane euthanasia to prevent suffering. Veterinary costs for diagnosis and compassionate end-of-life care typically range from 150 to 500 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
