Bullöses Pemphigoid · Canine bullous pemphigoid · Subepidermal blistering dermatosis · Autoimmune subepidermal blistering disease
Bullous pemphigoid is a rare autoimmune disease affecting the skin. In this condition, the dog's immune system mistakenly attacks the proteins that bond the outer layer of skin, called the epidermis, to the deeper layer underneath, known as the dermis. This microscopic separation causes the skin layers to split apart and form fluid-filled blisters.
Owners will typically notice painful blisters that quickly rupture into deep, raw sores in the mouth, on the paw pads, and around the groin. These symptoms usually first appear in young to middle-aged dogs.
This condition is incurable and requires lifelong management with immunosuppressive medications and close veterinary monitoring. The lifetime cost of treatment and supportive care typically ranges from €2,500 to €8,000.
