Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia · Immotile Cilia Syndrome · Kartagener-Syndrom · Ziliendyskinesie · Ciliary dyskinesia, primary, generic
Primary ciliary dyskinesia is an inherited genetic disorder affecting the respiratory system. It causes the microscopic, hair-like structures called cilia that line the airways to be malformed or unable to move properly. Because these cilia cannot sweep away mucus and debris, the dog's lungs and nasal passages become chronically congested and prone to infection.
Owners will typically notice symptoms starting in puppyhood, including a chronic cough, thick nasal discharge, and difficulty breathing. Affected dogs also frequently develop recurrent, severe lung infections.
This condition is incurable and requires lifelong daily management, including supportive inhalation therapy and antibiotics to control infections. Ongoing veterinary care and treatment are expected to cost between 4,000 and 15,000 EUR.
