Primary ciliary dyskinesia is an inherited disorder affecting the respiratory system. It causes dysfunction in the cilia, which are tiny, hair-like structures lining the airways that normally sweep away mucus, dust, and bacteria. Without functioning cilia, the lungs cannot clear themselves, leading to chronic airway inflammation and recurrent infections.
Symptoms typically appear in puppyhood and include a persistent moist cough, chronic nasal discharge, and frequent respiratory infections. Owners may also notice their dog has low energy, struggles with exercise, or develops recurrent pneumonia.
There is no cure for this lifelong condition, but supportive care such as inhalations, mucus-thinning medications, and antibiotics can manage symptoms. Ongoing veterinary care is required, with lifetime treatment costs typically ranging from €3,000 to €12,000.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
