Dermatosparaxis Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (dEDS), ADAMTS2-related(dEDS)
Dermatosparaxie · Ehlers-Danlos-Syndrom Typ VIIC · Kutane Asthenie · Cutaneous asthenia · ADAMTS2-related Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
What it is
Dermatosparaxis Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (dEDS) is a severe inherited connective tissue disorder that primarily affects the skin. It is caused by a genetic mutation in the ADAMTS2 gene, which prevents collagen—the main structural protein that holds tissues together—from forming correctly. This defect leaves the skin extremely fragile and lacking its normal structural strength.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice extremely loose, saggy, and highly elastic skin in puppies within their first few weeks of life. This fragile skin tears very easily during normal play or minor contact, leading to deep wounds that heal very slowly.
Treatment
This condition is incurable and requires lifelong, intensive wound care and protective clothing to prevent injuries. Managing these chronic skin issues typically costs between €2,000 and €12,000, and due to the severe impact on quality of life, early euthanasia is often considered.
