Ectodermal dysplasia with skin fragility syndrome (ED-SFS) is a severe genetic disorder affecting the skin and its associated structures, such as hair, claws, and teeth. It is caused by a defect in the proteins that normally bind skin cells together, leading to extremely weak cell cohesion. This lack of structural integrity makes the skin highly vulnerable to tearing and peeling under normal wear and tear.
Symptoms typically appear in puppyhood, often as soon as the puppy begins interacting with littermates. Owners will notice extremely fragile skin that tears or blisters easily, patchy hair loss, malformed claws, and missing or abnormal teeth.
There is no cure for this condition, and management requires lifelong, intensive wound care and protective measures to prevent skin damage. Treatment focuses on managing recurring infections and protecting the skin, with lifetime costs typically ranging from 3,000 to 12,000 EUR.
