It directly affects the dog's skin and coat, preventing normal hair growth and causing localized immune-system reactions. A skin biopsy, which involves analyzing a small tissue sample under a microscope, is required to confirm the diagnosis.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in early adulthood, manifesting as progressive hair loss, scaling, redness, and crusting that often starts on the head or back.
Treatment
The condition is incurable and requires lifelong management with specialized shampoos, fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory medications. Lifetime treatment costs typically range from 1,500 to 5,000 EUR.
