What it is
Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), also known as Alabama Rot or Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (CRGV), is a severe condition that causes damage to the small blood vessels, primarily affecting the kidneys and skin. This damage leads to the premature destruction of red blood cells and a rapid drop in platelets, which are the cells responsible for blood clotting. The resulting blockages in the tiny blood vessels of the kidneys can quickly lead to acute kidney failure.
How it presents
Owners typically first notice unexplained skin sores, lesions, or ulcers on the dog's lower legs, face, or stomach, followed by vomiting, severe lethargy, and decreased urination. The condition can affect dogs of any age and usually develops very suddenly.
Treatment
This is a critical medical emergency requiring immediate, intensive hospital care, including intravenous fluids and supportive therapies. Treatment is a one-time, high-intensity intervention rather than a lifelong management plan, with costs typically ranging from €2,000 to €8,000.
