Palmoplantar keratoderma · DSG1-related hyperkeratosis · Footpad hyperkeratosis · Palmoplantare Keratose · Hereditary Footpad Hyperkeratosis (DSG1-related) · Palmoplantar Hyperkeratosis (Discovered in the Rottweiler)
This is an inherited skin disorder caused by a genetic mutation that disrupts how skin cells bind to one another. Without proper cell adhesion, the outer layer of the skin becomes unstable, leading to an extreme thickening of the paw pads, a condition known as hyperkeratosis. This primarily affects the integrity of the dog's paw pads and skin barrier.
Symptoms typically appear in puppies or young dogs, manifesting as thick, hard, and deeply cracked paw pads. Owners will notice the dog showing signs of pain, limping, or developing secondary infections in the cracks.
This condition is incurable and requires lifelong, daily management to soften the pads and treat painful cracks. Lifetime costs for specialized topical treatments, protective boots, and veterinary care typically range from €10,000 to €30,000.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
