This is an inherited neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system, where the protective myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibers fails to develop properly. Without this adequate insulation, nerve signals cannot travel efficiently between the brain and the body. This disruption leads to impaired coordination and involuntary muscle movements.
Symptoms typically become noticeable in puppies around two weeks of age, characterized by pronounced full-body tremors and a lack of coordination. These tremors are usually most severe when the puppy is active or excited and may subside when they are resting.
There is no cure for this condition, and management is supportive to help the dog navigate their mobility challenges. Depending on the severity and whether the dog's symptoms improve as they mature, supportive care costs typically range from 500 to 4000 EUR.
