ASPRV1-associated ichthyosis · ASPRV1-Ichthyose · Congenital ichthyosis German Shepherd
This form of ichthyosis is an inherited skin disorder caused by a genetic mutation in the ASPRV1 gene, which is passed down in an autosomal-dominant pattern. This mutation disrupts the normal renewal and protective barrier function of the outer layer of the skin, known as the epidermis. Because the inheritance is dominant, a dog only needs to inherit one copy of the mutated gene from a single parent to develop the condition.
Symptoms typically become visible in puppies or young dogs as large, dry, and often dark scales across the body. Owners will also notice rough skin and a higher susceptibility to secondary skin infections.
There is no cure for this condition, meaning it requires lifelong management with specialized therapeutic shampoos and moisturizing products. The estimated lifetime cost for this supportive care ranges from 1,500 to 5,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
