This is an inherited skin disorder caused by a genetic mutation that disrupts how the outer layer of the skin forms and sheds. Specifically, it affects the skin's ability to produce essential fats that maintain the natural moisture barrier, leading to a buildup of dry, dead skin cells. This disruption in the normal shedding process results in thick, scaly skin.
Symptoms typically appear during puppyhood, often within the first few months of life. Owners will notice large, dry, and sometimes dark scales on the dog's abdomen and body, accompanied by a dry, dull coat.
The condition is incurable and requires lifelong management rather than a one-time cure. Regular treatment with specialized shampoos and moisturizing therapies is necessary, with lifetime costs typically ranging from 1,500 to 4,500 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
